A Casefor Chad.

Chad Hugo sued Pharrell in January 2026 over money and financial records. The claims are contested. This is a love letter to the Neptunes co-founder, told by the people who were there.

The dispute, in context

The filings contain allegations and legal arguments, not findings of wrongdoing. The interviews below retain their original dates.

A dispute over the name

Hugo opposed trademark applications for The Neptunes, asserting shared ownership. PW IP Holdings denied the core allegations in its answer. This is a separate proceeding from the later federal lawsuit.

A lawsuit over the business

Hugo sued Williams and related companies, seeking financial records, an accounting, and relief over allegedly withheld money from their Neptunes and N.E.R.D. businesses.

Arguments over the claims

Williams and Talamasca sought dismissal of federal copyright claims, challenging whether Hugo had identified the works, rights, and contributions adequately. Hugo opposed the motion. These filings do not decide who made which musical contribution.

Selected filings reviewed October 26, 2026. This is a music archive, not a live court docket or a verdict on the dispute.

About this archive

An independent collection of interviews, studio footage, and documented credits. The Neptunes are Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams. N.E.R.D. also includes Shae Haley.

A shared credit does not tell us who played every note. A collaborator’s recollection is an account of a session. Each entry keeps its source and context. Square brackets clarify names or musical parts; ellipses mark omissions.
